About Me

I am an astrologer & medium, born in the lower east side of new york city, and currently in the sf bay area. I first learned to read charts in middle school, in order to roast my classmates. I have been a professional astrologer for 10 years, and am currently working on my first book “untitled land back project”.

I studied under Sam Reynolds in 2020, and currently hold certificates on fixed star readings, from the Portland astrology school and completed a psychic development course at minka. I have taught astrology 101 at p.l.a.c.e., an eco village & arts space in the bay.

Q&A with Astra Najma

  1. 1. Tell us a bit about you and your practice.

my name is astra najma, and i'm an astrologer, medium, and tarot reader. i learned how to cast a birth chart in middle school, and i used the book "darkside astrology" to roast my friends and write stories for them. i grew up in a rural part of new york, so i was a wild and psychic nature baby, who learned about the constellations, planets, and mythology in my spare time.

i've been a professional astrologer for 10 years. i'm a former student of sam reynolds, who gave me foundations in traditional and hellenistic techniques. i then went on to get a certificate from the portland astrology school, and another certificate in fixed stars, and graduated from the psychic development intensive from minka in brooklyn.

i would say i blend a deep knowledge of technique with the intuitive. i've been social justice organizing since i was 16 years old so a lot of my clients come from that world as well, trying to find how to resist fascism in a way that is long term and sustainable.

  2. 2. What moment or realization made astrology and/or tarot “click” for you in a real, lived way?

from 2016 - 2020, i was a modern astrologer because that's what a lot of the queer folks in nyc were doing. once i studied with sam, i scheduled client sessions where i did a modern reading, then a traditional astrology reading. the response to the traditional astrology reading was overwhelming, so i stuck with it.

the community i found after that, the friends i made, made it clear to me that i was in alignment.

  3. 3. What’s something most people misunderstand about astrology and/or tarot that you’re always gently correcting?

just because something is in a book, that means it's right. the publishing industry is something we need to be critical of! we're so afraid of being wrong that we lose the ability to enjoy being learners. explore! experiment!

  4. 4. Tell us your thoughts on the astrology of 2026 and how it’s likely showing up in people’s everyday lives right now.

our lives are changing! we're currently in eclipse season with saturn going into aries. it's a huge time to make new decisions, learn from past mistakes.

on a structural level, shit is getting real. climate chaos and water access are going to continue to be huge issues for the next few decades, and these conversations are just beginning. we need to do what we can to keep water sacred and abundant.

  5. 5. What’s a recurring life theme you see in your readings right now (love, career pivots, endings, rebirth, boundaries), and how do you help people work with it instead of resisting it?

in locational astrology, i see a lot of people who are like "where should i settle down?" and i'm the one to give them the news "you're going to be nomadic for a little while longer!". i think we sometimes imagine a nice apartment, or home, as a form of success. it can actually be a hinderance, especially if you need to spend 3 months in one place, 3 months in another, to connect with the land & space in a deeper way.

in pet readings, i've definitely been working on relational repair with caretakers and their animals. sometimes we don't realize how much our pets rely on us, and center their world around us, so clingy behavior can be an attempt to rebuild trust. the caretaker feels overwhelmed and pulls away - and so disrupting that cycle as a communicator has come up for me a lot recently.

  6. 6. When someone comes to you feeling stuck, what part of the chart do you look at first and why? If you do tarot or another practice, tell us about your process for this.

I look at mars. I ask about conflict - are you avoiding it? Where in your body do you feel this stuckness? Let's stoke the fires of sacred rage and see what needs to burn.

  7. 7. When someone is trying to understand their love life more deeply, where do you guide them to look first? What parts of the chart, energy, or inner patterns tend to reveal the most?

The ruler of the first house, then the 5th house, then the 7th house. Are they talking to each other? Let's see what's happening with the lot of eros?

I tend to have people focus on the partner they want to be, rather than the partner they want to find. There's an energy to being attractive - let's cultivate it.

  8. 8. When someone is trying to understand their career life or work/ purpose more deeply, where do you guide them to look first? What parts of the chart, energy, or inner patterns tend to reveal the most?

Since I use whole sign houses, I look to see if the midheaven is in the 9th house, or the 11th house, which to me can indicate roles outside of a typical 9 - 5 gig, or using the day job to generate income in alternative ways. for example, a community organizer who's job might not be lucrative, but if they start a blog, it brings in paid gigs and opportunities. .

  9. 9. What’s one small but meaningful practice or reflection you’d recommend people try based on their natal chart or reading?

I draw charts by hand and have started giving them to folks irl as keepsakes. there's something about morning pages (writing/drawing/creating on 3 pages each morning) and putting pen to paper that is grounding.

  10. 10. What are your favorite decks + resources that you think people should know about?

my teacher, sam reynolds, has his 3 level courses, nitty gritty astrology. if you're an aspiring practitioner, he's a wonderful teacher.

my favorite tarot deck to currently pull cards from is the pasta tarot. it's a deliciously queer & luscious deck.

i'm obsessed with my own substack. i do monthly transit updates and blog about whatever is going on in my life. for paid subscribers, they get updates about the book i'm writing, untitled land back project.
